CBCT Referrals
What is a CBCT Scan?
A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is a specialised dental X-ray that produces a detailed 3D image of the jawbones, teeth, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional dental X-rays, CBCT scans provide a more comprehensive view, making them particularly valuable for implant planning, root canal treatments, and diagnosing complex dental issues.
Radiation Dose Information
Understanding radiation exposure is important when considering a CBCT scan. Below are comparisons to put the dose into perspective:
- Average yearly background radiation: 2,200 µSv
- Flight to New York: 150 µSv
- CBCT scan: 40–150 µSv
The radiation dose from a CBCT scan is relatively low, especially considering the level of detail it provides for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Referral Guidelines for Practitioners
CBCT scans can only be requested by registered dentists on a referral basis. Practitioners must have adequate training to justify the use of CBCT and interpret the results appropriately. Additionally:
- All CBCT scans must be reported on by an adequately trained practitioner or a consultant radiologist.
- Reports can be arranged through the referring practice if required.
For detailed guidelines on radiation protection and the proper use of CBCT scans, practitioners should refer to the current regulations and best practices outlined by dental radiography standards.
CBCT scanning represents a significant advancement in dental imaging, combining detailed diagnostic capability with patient safety through controlled radiation exposure.
Costs (from)
Single Arch/ Small volume (5×5) £120
Dual arch £195
Radiology report £80 (per small volume or single arch)
Radiology report £140 (Dual arch)
Please note it is not possible to visualise the sinus osteo-meatal drainage complex although the sinus floor can be visualised with our scanner.
CBCT scans of small volumes (1-5 teeth) and full jaws can be provided. The practice cannot currently provide scans that detail full maxillary sinuses with the osteo-meatal complexes although the sinus floor can be comfortably included in the field of view.
A Service Level Agreement will need to be in place with the practice before referrals can be accepted. This should be downloaded, signed and returned to the practice.

Once a referral has been received the practice will contact your patient and arrange the scan. The scan can be provided as a CD or via an online download. The file format is in DICOM format and free viewing software (Planmeca). Alternatively free, fully functioned implant planning software is available.
